Disappointed with a perceived feeling of being duped.

At the end of last year, we decided to upgrade our PVR to the new explora due to several calls over the previous months from various Multichoice sales agents. As we have to televisions and on the PVR we watched two different programmes on these two televisions I looked at the various trade in options and the trade in option 3 looked the most similar to the system we were using currently which includes an explora and a HD Decoder. I tried getting advice from various call center agents as to the differences on the packages but there was not much more information forthcoming explaining the different functionalities. So late last year I went into the branch and did the swap out for PVR re Option 3 which cost me R1,999.00. The explora and the decoder were installed by an approved installer and yet the HD decoder was not functioning and I was told by DSTV as well as the installer it is being reset and will come up after a couple of hours. This did not happen and I was told to take the HD decoder into Multichoice which I did earlier this year. There it was discovered that the unit was faulty and I was given a new unit. By this time I had become fami**** with the functionality of the explora and requested that the unit is rather swopped for an explora and that I pay in the price difference. This option was rejected by the Multichoice agent and I was informed I have no other option but to take the HD unit although I no longer wanted this system. So I told them not to initiate the unit as I would not be using it. This means that I took the HD unit and had to go buy a new explora separately. The problem is that currently the explora is still not picking up a signal on the second installation point which now means I have to get an installer out again to get this set up despite the fact that full installation was supposed to have been paid for two viewing points. My disappointment is that I have come to realise that if I had initially taken the option to only take the PVR swop option for Qty 1 explora with installation I would have paid R999.00. I have thus discovered that I paid R1,000.00 for an HD unit that is worthless to me that is being sold with dish and installation R584.00 or without dish and installation anything between R300.00 and R450.00 at various stores. I feel ********** as I now have a HD decoder I effectively paid R1,000.00 for after I requested the agent to change my option. The HD decoder I “purchased” from Multichoice for R1,000.00 was faulty and I should have been given the option to exchange this for an explora and pay in the difference. Effectively Multichoice has taken R1,000.00 from me for an item that is worth much less and I do not want and I now have to purchase the explora and again pay for an installer.

Dear Dinah - the first HD decoder I got was faulty and I took it in and it was tested faulty. This is when I requested that the HD decoder is replaced rather with an explora and Multichoice refused and insisted that I can only replace it with another HD decoder. This is why I asked them not to test it as I will not be using it. I then went to buy a new explora. The point is still that if I had only chosen the explora with installation I would have paid R1,000.00 - yet I chose to add the HD decoder for an additional R1,000.00. How do you justify R1,000.00 for an HD decoder with installation if it is available on the open market for 1/2 that price? Also if I am given a faulty unit and I then request to rather swop it for a different unit why is this not allowed? In any other store, I could get my money back if I wish to return an item that has not been used and get my money back. I have a brand new HD decoder that has never been used - not even tested - and yet cannot return it and get my money back. Why is that. Surely that is not fair commercial practice?
