Customers incur cost on Multichoice behalf

I received a letter from Multichoice last year informing me that my SD PVR decoder is no longer supported and that I will start to lose channels and would need to upgrade to a newer decoder. I have been paying insurance on my decoder and don't understand why I would need to pay out of my pocket for Multichoice's decision to change technologies. If Multichoice were thinking of fairness to their customers they should offer a replacement decoder(s) and setup that is similar to my current setup at no cost to me. It is very disappointing that they do this and make it seem that they're doing me a favour by offering a new decoder at a lower than retail price. Another example of pulling the wool over the consumers eyes.

Hello terrencer,

We would like to sincerely apologise for the delay and any inconvenience caused.
When your SD PVR was first released, we only had a handful of channels on DStv - there are now over 100. Your SD PVR has reached the stage where it won't be able to cope much longer with the growing number of services. Your decoder may experience missing channels, an incomplete TV guide or even freeze-ups.
While your SD PVR is still working, you can keep accessing DStv without having to do anything. It's only when your decoder stops working, or when we launch the new satellite, that you'll need to take action.

When your decoder stops working, you can bring it to one of the MultiChoice Walk-in Centres to trade for a newer model decoder at a reduced price. We're currently offering the DStv Explora at R1 699 (that's a R300 discount on the normal purchase price).
To get two independent viewing environments, you'll need to link two decoders together through XtraView. You can either link two DStv Exploras, two DStv HD Decoders or a DStv Explora with a DStv HD decoder.

Regards

Nesta
