Contract extension without my consent

Two years ago I signed a contract with DStv until March 31st, 2017. To my surprise, they continued with the contract without informing me first. I called their office after two months trying to find out what was happening next: should I continue or discontinue with the contract. The response was that I owed them R2400. Is it legal to take a decision for the client without notification?
