3 years not using the service then harassed for "outstanding" money

I have stopped using DSTV for over three years now as I couldn't afford it any more. Multichoice working on a no pay - no view policy never had any problems in the past cutting my services if the account wasn't paid in full by the 1st of a month. It happened on numerous occasions in the past in which case I had to pay a R50 "re-activation" fee if I want to use the service again. So I stopped paying and the service was cut as per usual.

Today, more than three years later, I received a phone call to inform me that my DSTV account is in arrears. Apparently I needed to phone to inform them that my subscription needed to be cancelled. Fair enough; I did not know this upfront, but it makes sense I suppose. However, why was this issue not dealt with at that time? Why is it only now a problem and am I being held liable to pay all the interest? Someone didn't do their job like they were supposed to at the time. Are your services becoming so expensive that people stop using you and now you need to make your money on other ways? I'm not sure how many people you are catching out like this, but I can assure you that I'm not going to be one of them.

Good Afternoon Elna,

Thank you for your reply. I think I know now what is going on here. Around the date mentioned by you we did a change of ownership to my wife's grandparents since their decoder was very old and they required one that is in a working condition. I did try to do this over the phone to no avail as my request was met with an instruction to go to the head offices to get it done.

Upon arrival, I was told that there is an outstanding amount on my account which was also quite surprising to me. I can now figure that the outstanding amount was also most probably due to me not notifying Multichoice of the cancellation previously. Not being in the mood for a fight and just wanting to get the change of ownership done with, I paid the amount. I made it very clear, however, that I don't want to re-activate the service. The language barrier obviously took its toll as exactly the opposite of what I requested was then done. I was unaware that the service was re-activated during this period.

What security do I now have that if I settle the outstanding amount, some bright spark isn't going to re-activate the services once again?

Kind regards,

Stefan Booysen.

Good day Elna,

I have seeked some legal advice on this matter. I have been advised to request proof that I requested the services to be activated for the period between 28 June 2015 and 23 July 2015.

I had no reason to activate the account for a period of one month only and can confidently say that a mistake was made on Multichoice's side. In this case I have been billed for something I never requested and should actually be refunded for this.

Please supply me with adequate proof of my request to reactivate the services as I won't be paying a cent otherwise. You are most welcome to take this matter to court where I would fight my case.

Kind Regards,

Stefan Booysen

Today, almost four years after the previous comaint, I have "debt collectors" harrassing me almost every day.

As explained previously, I have never requested the services to be re-activated in 2015. Unless you can prove me otherwise by means of a recorded call or signed written request from my side to have the service reactivated, I will not pay this money.

You guys better find a way to get this account cleared. But daily harassment by your so called debt collectors is not going to persuade me. Have you chased all your customers away with your ridiculous fees so much so that an outstanding account of less than R300 of six years ago still bothers you to this day?
