Dental care - beware of the "expert" decision to the service you need

When I and my daughter visited her dentist practice, we went there just for the normal 6 months tooth cleaning. When we got there, we had to sign forms, one of which said she will review teeth and tell us which services are required. I enquired this because I was uncomfortable signing. She and her assistant assured me that she will ask me and only do a procedure that I agree to. On examination - first of all I was surprised with the x-ray image of my teeth, it was the first time I saw it like that.

Anyway, she recommended several procedure for me and my daughter. I told her that I do not have money. I only want to do what the medical aid will cover. She asked the assistant to go and check what the medical aid covers, when I agreed it was because she assured me that she will only do what the medical aid will pay for. I was surprised when I got a call from the lawyers 2 months ago, telling me that I'm owing. The worst thing is that I was owing her about R300 and now I have to pay about R1200. At the time of the call I was supposed to pay R1000. I never received the statement and bank details. It turns out the lawyers sent to an incorrect email address. Hence now the amount has increased.
