“My post-op experience – Dr Liana Volkwyn

My Experience – Centurion Day Hospital / Dr Liana Volkwyn I underwent surgery at Centurion Day Hospital / Centurion Cosmetic Clinic on 19 June 2024 under the care of Dr Liana Volkwyn. After discharge, I developed serious complications and repeatedly reported worsening symptoms via the emergency phone number, including photographs. These messages were not escalated to the surgeon, and no surgeon review occurred during this critical period. A VAC dressing was inserted by a nurse without accredited certification, in the absence of the surgeon, and no blood tests or wound swabs were taken at that time. I was not treated at any other hospital until 29 June 2024, when tests revealed Acinetobacter species infection, which I was not informed of at the time, despite its clinical importance. My condition worsened, requiring emergency admission and transfer to Bedford Life, ZAH, and Life Groenkloof, where I was treated for severe infection and septic shock. An independent review by the APRASSA National Ombudsman confirmed concerns regarding lack of post-operative care and continuity and noted that the surgeon was formally cautioned regarding practice management. I share this review to highlight the importance of proper post-operative follow-up, escalation protocols, qualified clinical intervention, and timely communication of critical results.
