Complaint Regarding Unprofessional Conduct by Neurosurgeon

I am writing to this a complaint regarding the conduct of Dr Mathola, a neurosurgeon I consulted previously at his sessional rooms at Sandton Mediclinic. I am deeply concerned by the dismissive and unprofessional manner in which he engaged with me following a legitimate attempt to clarify a medical matter related to an MRI he had prescribed.

After being advised by his receptionist to contact him directly via a mobile number she provided, I sent a WhatsApp message to confirm whether the number belonged to Dr Mathola before sharing any personal medical information.

Approximately 24 hours later after me sending a follow up note to please respond. His initial response was “Who is this?”, to which I rep**** that I was a patient, but did not yet disclose identifying details as I was still verifying the legitimacy of the number.

He responded stating that the number was reserved for emergencies and that I should make an appointment if it was not urgent. I expressed concern that an emergency line should not take 24 hours to respond. In response, Dr Mathola phoned me and asked whether I was an existing patient, then proceeded to question “who I think I am” for raising concerns and “giving him instructions.”

I attempted to explain that I was simply verifying the number before disclosing sensitive information, but he interrupted and stated that unless I was “dying,” I should book an appointment.

Feeling disrespected and dismissed, I ended the call and sent a message thanking him and indicating that no further communication was necessary. He rep**** by instructing me to “find another specialist.”

I am submitting this complaint because I believe this interaction reflects a serious lapse in professional conduct, patient communication, and ethical care. The tone and language used were inappropriate and demeaning, and the delayed response on a number designated for emergencies raises concerns about patient safety protocols.
