Great service, but you're tied to a Netstar contract for 3 years...

Happy with most things so far (consultants are excellent and speak my language which I appreciate). However, one little thing, when you take out the insurance you are forced into a 3 year contract with Netstar for a tracking device that gets installed into your vehicle. They explain upfront that if you cancel your insurance with Dotsure the remainder of your contract with Netstar will continue. When asking how I would be able to get out of the Netstar contract they kind of brush it off by saying you can give notice but there will be a "cancellation fee". And no one seems to be able to give you the mysterious cancellation fee amount because "it can only be calculated on the day of cancelation as it'll depend on the remainder of your 36 month contract". So that can pretty much be any amount... and they will cover themselves by saying you "agreed to the terms & conditions". I hope the mystery of the cancellation fee amount will soon be unveiled to me and other prospective customers...

Thanks for the quick reply by Natassia Fourie who provided a list outlining the settlement amount payable to Netstar should you wish to cancel the contract with them within the first 3 years. Looking at the prices I would recommend staying insured with Dotsure for the first 3 years which includes the Netstar premium.

So it is a year later and I decided to sell my car, but have not bought another one. I contacted Netstar to discuss my options. I have one of three options, I either pay a cancellation fee of R1500 to get out of the contract, or if I choose to transfer the tracking device to another car I need to pay a R655 transfer fee. If I never buy another vehicle again but cannot afford the cancellation fee right now, I have to pay R287 for them to remove the device from my old car (and I can keep it as a door stop...) after which I still need to pay my premium of R130 per month until the contract expires. It is the weirdest thing to think I have to pay for cover which does not exist... #Netstar
