Overpaid

I have been paying DMC debts collectors for my rsc credit card only to find out that I have been paying but my balance doesn't go down and stop buying them, after all this time I just realized that I owe them R4000, someone please help how does debt collectors works you pay them first or you have to settle the amount that they told you about, cause I have overpaid them
