Discovery "Insuring healthy people" - Really? I think not!

After noticing a reduction in my Discovery cashback rewards on life and medical policies, I initially contacted a call centre representative to query why this reduction has occurred. The agent then sent me a list of all my claims, maintaining that these claims were the basis for the reduction (as the claims lowered my cashback percentage bracket), regardless of the nature of these claims.

The following is an email sent to my Discovery Health broker and various other Discovery representatives after noticing a reduction in my cashback rewards.

"After reviewing my policies online, I have noticed that my percentage cash back for the last two and a half years dropped to approximately 30%, and not approximately 50% for my diamond status. When I phoned the call center to query this, they said that I have claimed R13000 per year which dropped the percentage and also that discovery is all about insuring healthy people.

My savings on my medical account is about R2000, so all the rest of the claims I paid out of my pocket, although the places that submitted the claims have my medical aid details on file and do so automatically.

If discovery really take a look at my claims they will see that all the claims and visits to the docs etc, is to keep me 100% healthy, thus preventative measures as I am a competitive triathlete and need to be in top form in order for me to compete in my Iron Man, half Iron Man, Olympic and sprint triathlons, run and swim and cycle events and my training. You will see this on my uploads from my garmin watch, I am very active and not a sick person at all.

So why am now getting penalized for staying healthy, going for my regular checkups etc if discovery is all about insuring healthy people, then this is simply not true....

I want this matter resolved because i feel its unfair and needs to be rectified for the last two and a half years, because instead of rewarding me for being healthy you are penalizing me for it.....

--

Pierre van Tonder

Body-K-netic

(for a healthy lifestyle)"

After then corresponding with Discovery on a managerial level, I was instructed for medical proof from my GP and medical team to legitimize the basis of these claims in order to justify my claims being in accordance with my healthy, active and physically demanding sporting lifestyle. I obtained the letter from my GP and medical team, which illustrated that these claims were in accordance with an individual leading a healthy, preventative and physically active lifestyle, especially a competitively sporting lifestyle. This letter was then sent to Discovery for further review.

I was then notified that Discovery would be closing the inquiry as they do not feel this complaint can be dealt with on a personal client basis, as I fall within a larger client bracket. They offered no personal compensation for being treated as an unhealthy, medically dependant individual, when I am in fact, I am the complete opposite.

Discovery can be heard, on radio, print, television and digital media claiming to abide by the slogan "Insuring healthy people" and by rewarding people for being healthy and living an active, preventative lifestyle. This simply IS NOT TRUE!! I have been financially penanlised for living the lifestyle they promote amongst their clients and have not been awarded the benefits they promise unsuspecting clients during the sign-up process.

After having been dismissed by Discovery, I now wanted to warn other healthy and active people about the pitfalls of signing with Discovery, as they do not insure "healthy" people.
