What you see on Discovery Life Policy benefits is a total lie....
I took my life cover with Discovery Life last year September 2016. My life cover included an immediate death benefit expenses, severe illness benefit, disability benefit and death benefit. Unfortunately, I had an unfortunate circumstance that changed my life for the worst in May 2017. I was admitted for almost 4 weeks and 2 of which I spent in ICU fighting for my life. I can only be thankful to the team at Muelmed Hospital High Care Unit in the superior treatment and care i received. I was admitted on the 26 May and discharged on the 16th.June 2017. I took time recuperating before contacting discovery life to claim for severe illness benefit. I was told to send a medical report from the specialist that treated me of which I sent on the 7th August 2017. I called Discovery almost every other day to find out how far are they in assessing my medical report and I was told the assessors are still busy with it and they will come back to me however this did not happen until i laid a complaint on the 29th August 2017 about the bad service I was receiving. On the same day, I received an email with lots of documents for me to complete and to also send to the doctors who treated me whilst I was in hospital. It took me 2 weeks to get hold of those doctors to sit and complete the forms for me. I sent the completed forms together with the required information last week Monday the 11th. Today, I receive an email saying my claim does not fit the criteria for severe illness. Really? how can I be admitted in ICU if this was not severe??? I was bedridden for weeks with Steven Johnson's Syndrome, Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis and sever asthma. Any doctor would know how serious and hectic these illnesses are. I really don't know anymore as this has caused me a lot of distress, I have outstanding hospital bills that the medical aid did not cover, i still need intense dermatological treatments, I have lost my senses of smell and taste. I almost died. Basically, Discovery does not tell you which illnesses are classified under severe illness benefit until you get sick and they dont want to pay you. They advertise their sickness benefit as if it's the best in the market claiming that you can claim as many times as you can but in reality, that is not the case. I am also concerned that had I died, my family would have struggled claiming for immediate death expense claim benefit as they would have taken their time to respond...worse, my kids would not have access to my death benefit. It all looks good on paper until you make a claim and that's when you will see how they will treat you. I have a feeling the assessor who was dealing with my claim is not even a doctor and is probably a ****** as well. His attitude in dealing with my case was very insensitive. If I had to send a medical report in the first place that had to be assessed before it was regarded as a possible claim, then why did they proceed in sending me more forms to complete when they knew my diagnosis according to the report was not fitting their criteria?? This is emotionally and physically draining and I don't think i will recommend anyone to join discovery life after what I have experienced. I was with Liberty life for years and their service has been very efficient and fast. I need discovery to clarify to me what is a ''severe illness" and why don't they tell their clients the list of those 'severe illnesses' that fit their criteria so that we don't waste time and emotions claiming for benefits that don't exist. I am glad to be alive to live to tell all this.
