Discovery Life not honouring payouts!
I have three life insurance policies with Discovery Life. My occupation is a plumber by trade and as any other plumber working for himself also a business owner. The policies commencement dates are respectively 2020-11-01, 2021-05-01, 2021-05-01, with a total monthly premium of R40,160.61. Since my neck operation in 2022 I have been struggling with Chronic pain, outlined by a range of doctors as, “chronic neck and back pain with radiculopathy”, “failed back and neck syndrome”, “mechanical cervical pain secondary to spondylosis”, “mechanical lumber spine pain secondary to spondylosis”, “nociceptive pain”. I have undergone numerous procedures after the operation namely, pharmacological blocks, pulsed radiofrequency stimulations of the cervical and lumbar dorsal medial branches, ketamine infusions, all of which was unsuccessful. According to all the medical professionals I have consulted and have been referred to there is no other procedures or treatments available and that I will always have chronic pain, which they can treat to the best of their knowledge. Currently heavy medication as prescribed, hydrotherapy and land-based exercises is the treatment regime that was decided is the best and only way forward. I have pain daily, but at least I can keep it to a bearable level with the treatment regime. If, however, I must drive long distances, have no help to do certain lifting, and even the part of the treatment regime of hydrotherapy and land-based exercises it causes more pain and flare ups of the pain. This causes me to take more than the prescribed dosage of the medication which entails sedation, lack of concentration and bed rest. I am extremely unhappy, frustrated and disappointed that I have paid my monthly contributions and that all my policies, medical aid, insurance are with Discovery, but now Discovery is not willing to honour the payouts as per Category B in the policy wording of the three policies(which include LifeTime 300 and MedTech Booster Benefit), and the ICB of 5 years which will allow me to plan for the future. The ongoing saga of the last 30 months has caused me extreme financial and emotional damage. I am left with no choice but to take this to the FAIS Ombudsman.
