Disability Claim Repeatedly Declined!!!!
Mr AE Dinath Policy: ********** 960 RE: Policy: Discovery Life
I would like to explain my situation to both Afken (my brokers) and yourselves (Discovery Life) regarding my claim for the Medical Access Cover and Capital Disability for the aforementioned policy number. I have paid for this policy faithfully without missing a premium up until the back end of 2017 when I fell ill. Because of medical expenses I was unable to meet the payments for a few months and went into arrears. I was in discussion with Brenda Morgan from Afken and Rakshanda Hiraparsad from Discovery about resolving the arrears so that the policy could be kept alive whilst I went through my financial difficulties. I was given the understanding that once I brought my arrears up to date the policy will be in force and I should be able to claim in the case of a problem. I duly obliged and sorted out the outstanding amount – you can confirm this with Brenda and Rakshanda. I was diagnosed with cancer in January 2018. I put through my first claim for Disability Cover and Medical Access but this was refused based on the grounds that it was not a stage 4 cancer. When I submitted proof from the doctor that it was a stage 4 cancer Discovery brought up the arrears amount and the policy suspension status. Please see the dialogue in the emails attached. When the claim was lodged again, my policy was no more in arrears –the T4 stage of the cancer was no more an issue. My cancer was removed by surgery in Cape Town - all of the cancer was deemed to be clear based on the post-operative scan. After my operation, my doctor informed me that I needed to undergo radio therapy of the mandibular region at the Donald Gordon Oncology Centre in Johannesburg. During the 4th week of radiation, there was an occurrence of another cancer in a separate region of my mouth. This had nothing to do with the first cancer as it was in a separate location of my mouth – away from the excision of the mandible. This area was not infected previously when the original cancer was found. I want to claim for this occurrence of the cancer – however Discovery Life are declining this claim as well and tying the first and second occurrences under one umbrella. The second incident occurred in April / May 2018 when I was up to date with my premiums. After two or three board meetings the decision from Discovery Life stands the same - the 2 incidents are related. I have faithfully paid my premiums since bringing it all up to date and not missed a single payment. What is being done with my premiums for the disability, if every single instance (claim) is being refuted? I have rising medical costs because of the cancer (disability) and you are taking my premiums without advising me what the benefit there is for me if I continue. I have been a model client up until I faced my problem towards the end of last year and this is not taken into consideration. I have paid all the premiums – FOR NO BENEFIT. The latest incident has nothing to do with the first occurrence – the excision took care of the first cancer so the incidents are not tied. In your view thus far, every occurrence is related to the initial occurrence. If this is so, then I feel I am contributing to a Discovery charity every month without getting anything in return. I agree that I was in arrears – but I have abided by the request of the consultants to bring it up to date - each board meeting subsequently has resulted in them declining my claim even though there is a new cancer that has been found - whilst I am not in arrears. I am currently paying for disability cover but cannot claim. Discovery needs to be specific and clarify exactly what is it that I can claim for going forward – else I am being drained out of premiums without any benefit. I need your help to reconsider my matter. I have paid for all these years and defaulted only when I fell ill - still I managed to bring the premiums up to date. Remember the two claims are not related.
