Denied and Disregarded: When Loyalty to Discovery Doesn’t Matter

I’ve been a loyal Discovery customer for years, holding multiple products with them, and up until now, our relationship has been great. I’ve always been treated as a valued client—whenever I had concerns, they were heard and handled quickly. Credit where it’s due, Discovery has been excellent in that regard.

So naturally, when I decided to take out a life insurance policy with them, I expected the same level of service and fairness. I spent over an hour on the phone answering every question, with the amazing Peggy assisting me through the entire process. Everything seemed smooth.

Then, the next day, I received an email—my application was declined due to non-disclosure.

Let me break this down. Like many students, back in varsity, I occasionally smoked pot (which was legal at the time) and dealt with some anxiety due to academic stress. That was five years ago. Since then, I’ve grown, matured, and built a responsible life—I’m now a father, completely sober, and making sure my family is secure.

In fact, Discovery already had my history on record because I took out life insurance with them five years ago. I even mentioned this on the call, and they acknowledged it. So if they already had my file, how could they accuse me of non-disclosure? What exactly did I fail to disclose—something they already knew?

This isn’t just frustrating—it feels unfair. I was upfront. I was honest. And yet, after years of loyalty, I was dismissed without even a fair review of my case.

I don’t think I’m alone in this. If a company values transparency from its clients, shouldn’t it also uphold transparency in its decisions? At the very least, I expected a real conversation—not an impersonal email shutting me down.

I trusted Discovery to have my back. This experience has made me seriously question that trust.
