Consent and violation of POPIA

I have sent emails to my advisor, not response.

I am raising this complaint regarding Discovery’s unauthorised alteration of my personal information, specifically my surname.

After submitting my marriage certificate for verification purposes, Discovery changed my surname on their systems without my consent, despite the following:

My official South African ID document still reflects my ****en surname I have not changed my surname with the Department of Home Affairs I did not authorise or consent to Discovery making this change

Under South African law, marriage does not automatically result in a surname change, and a marriage certificate does not constitute consent to amend identity records held by a private institution. This conduct is concerning and appears to contravene the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), specifically provisions relating to:

lawful processing without consent, and maintaining accurate and non‑misleading personal information.

I have formally requested correction of my records in terms of Section 11,13,15, 16,18, 19 and 24 of POPIA and am awaiting confirmation that my surname will be corrected to match my official ID.

I trust Discovery will urgently address this matter, confirm the correction in writing, and ensure that personal information is processed accurately and lawfully going forward. I am already in contact with the Information Regulator of South Africa for further guidance
