What good is insurance if they decide to change the goal posts without legally required notice?
I have been insured with them for 3 years. Recently they added a new requirement for an inspection of my thatched roof and to wait for the inspection company to contact me. There is no mention of my coverage being excluded, a material change to my terms, if I do not have this done, or if it is not completed in a certain period of time.
So the company contacts me on the 3rd of Feb, then on the 10th I receive a message stating that if I'm not able to secure an appointment before the 18th they will remove fire coverage from my policy. This clearly does not fall in the 31 days notice required by law.
I will be shopping for policies with other companies after this experience.

Thank you very much for reaching out to us. We acknowledge your concerns.
However, as per your Plan Guide 5.1, we may amend, endorse, or limit cover in terms of your plan at any time by providing you with 31 days’ written notice. Any changes you make will become effective from the agreed date and time.
Kindly note that your cover remains active; however, you are still required to make a booking within 7 days. Should an appointment not be secured within 7 days of this letter, fire cover will be excluded at the thatch property, including its contents.
We believe this initiative will strengthen our risk management framework and ensure that premiums accurately reflect the level of risk.

11 Feb 2026, 04:45In other words, this is going into the Discovery insurance circular file (******* bin).
I did note section 5.1 which says 31 days notice. So lets do some basic math:
On the 3rd of Feb 2026 I receive an e-mail from an outside contractor requesting that I contact them to set up an appointment for an inspection. Full text:

This is (redacted) from DANATI. I’ve been appointed by Discovery Insure to conduct a comprehensive Fire Risk Assessment for your property at (redacted).
Could we please have a short chat via email or phone call to arrange a convenient time for the assessment?
It only takes about 60 minutes, and I’ll ensure it’s as smooth and unobtrusive as possible.
Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

This is the 1st and only communication I received from either Discovery or you requesting an appointment. Also, of note, there was no previous communication and are no other terms or conditions specifying a required time period to respond to this request for an inspection.
Then on the 10th (7 days after the only other communication you sent about this) I receive a message stating that if I do not secure an appointment within 8 days you will cancel my fire cover.
There has been no material change on my end since I first took out my policy so, if we were to count the 10th as my notice date of cancellation, and the 18th as the cancelation date that is 8 days not 31. This is also not a reasonable notice period.
If this is the experience I'm getting with a claim free history I would hate to see what things are like if I actually had to make a claim and get paid.
"We believe this initiative will strengthen our risk management framework and ensure that premiums accurately reflect the level of risk." With the short notice, it sounds like you are trying to figure new ways to not have to pay a valid claim, while not reducing my rates and increasing your profits.
Definitely am actively shopping other providers.

11 Feb 2026, 15:33In your previous reply on this thread, a rep stated that I had 7 days, and in your second reply you stated I have 31 days.
In the second e-mail you send me, received 7 days after the 1st and only communication regarding this, you stated.
"Should an appointment not be secured before 18 February 2026 then fire cover will be excluded at the thatch risk address for building and contents."
Puts a big doubt in my head on what you will actually do here since two different things are being said.
