Very disappointing

I bought a car from an existing Discovery Insure client. I decided to continue with the insurance as I was a Discovery member across all their other services, and have been since 2001.

I was told I needed to have the C Track unit transferred into my name so arranged to have this done in PE as I live 120km away in Cape st Francis (CSF). I was sent a confirmation email for a date to have the unit transferred, so I drove through to PE to have it done. I got lost but called Discovery to notify the technician that I would be late but would be there shortly. Once I arrived, there was no technician available and when I called him myself after getting his number from the office, he said that he had no idea of our appointment as Discovery had not informed him that it had been set up.

Irritated, I drove the 120km back to CSF as this was a total waste of my time and petrol. The technician called me back to say he would arrange that someone came out to me in CSF to do the de-installation as I was in an outlying area.

That was in October 2015 and to-date no one has come out to do the job, 9 months later. I have called Discovery Insure more than 5 times to remind them that this needed to be done, but still no one has called me to confirm an appointment, so I stopped calling as it was again a waste of my time and money.

The battery on my car started failing, so I went in to Land Rover to have it assessed. What was a simple request turned into a major job as the technician could not trace the reason for the battery drain. I informed them that the car had a C Track installed, but when they called the C Track technician for advice, he informed them that there was no unit in the car. Their records showed that it had been removed in February 2016!

I tried to convince Discovery Insure that the unit had never been un-installed even after numerous efforts to have this done, and eventually the Land Rover technician found it under the drivers seat, much to the dismay of Discovery Insure.

Tests were done on the unit in the Land Rover workshop and it was determined that the C Track unit was draining the battery over a period of time, and that it was irreparable and needed to be raplaced. The bill for the battery and labour for 5 days was R13 000! And this for something that I had nothing to do with and for a car that was still under warranty.

I sent the bill and test report through to Discovery Insure as I expected them to refund me the costs based on the fact that Land Rover had proved that the C Track unit was to blame for the damage to the battery.

I never heard from Discovery Insure for 3 weeks so decided to go an see them myself while I was in Johannesburg for business and sort the issue out. I spoke to Vinesan Phillip, the head of C Track who denied that they were to blame for any damage to the battery. He offered me R2000 as goodwill compensation and said that I had better accept it as most clients that raise disputes with C Track never got a cent from them. I refused and said I expected them to cover the full cost of the damage as test results had proved they were to blame. He said he would retract the offer and I would get nothing if I didn't accept the R2000.

I left disgusted as the company is happy to take my monthly premium but when tests showed they were in the wrong, they were happy to let me pay for the majority of the loss.

The money has been transferred into my account already, but I don't accept this as I am the one caught in the middle and am out of pocket by R11 000. I have a product installed that has caused damage to my battery and all they are prepared to pay is 15% of the total.

I am going to cancel my insurance as I am not going to pay this company one more cent towards a ******* product and hopeless service to boot. I've not even benefitted from the actual savings of being a client as my tracker unit has not been linked to my account, so they have no idea how I drive or what my other idiosyncrasies are as a user.

I can't believe what an exhausting experience it has been dealing with Discovery Insure. A total waste of my time and money, again.

Thank you for taking my call.

As discussed I will refer this matter to DQ management, and will revert once investigation is done to determine the way forward.

Reviewer Update

A week ago Sakhe from Discovery contacted me and there was a flurry of activity from his side, saying he would arrange a call between myself and C Track who would like to query me on my review above, as they thought I had accepted the R2000 as compensation enough for the fracas that has been as a result of their inept service for almost 10 months now.

And still I wait for some closure on this debacle and quite frankly, can't wait to see the back of this division of the Discovery Group that has been an incredible disappointment seen as though I have supported them constantly with many of their services for almost 15 years now.

Not sure how long Sakhe thinks I should wait with no feedback but it just adds to the frustration.
