Vehicle insurance: A 20+% annual increase without any claims and decreasing vehicle values is madness!
We insured our vehicles with Discovery Insure about a year and a half ago. At the time we compared it with another policy, and it came in at about 15% more expensive, but we liked what Discovery offered so were prepared to pay a little more.
Everything has gone fairly smoothly, and we were happy until I made a "discovery" this week that changed all that:
* Discovery Insure increased the policy amount by exactly 20% on the 13th month. That is a 20% increase without any claims and with vehicle book values having decreased!! I shudder to think what will happen when we actually claim. * There was no notification at the time that either my wife or I saw. I've checked our email and could not find anything. Perhaps we missed it somehow, but I also checked the policy schedule and there is no mention of a 20%+ annual increase. Not was it mentioned in any conversation. We would never have taken up the policy if there was...
At first, I thought this had to be a mistake triggered by a single claim that was cancelled and perhaps not removed from the system, but my wife phoned and confirmed that it was not as a result of a claim. She was told that "this is just their standard increase per year" which could differ in exact percentage from year to year, so could even be more!!
I've never experienced this madness with any insurer over all the decades that I've had car insurance. At worst insurers kept the policy amount the same even though the vehicles reduced in value each year, which is bad enough. Imagine what the cumulative/compound effect of a 20% increase is over 5 or 10 years! It doesn't make sense and needless to say we will have to move our vehicle insurance asap.
I can't see how this can be made right, if this is how Discovery Insure operates. It's an operating model flaw - we simply won't be able to use them. Be aware that once we move it is highly, highly unlikely that we will ever consider Discovery Insure again, for anything.
As a starting point I want the additional ~R3K back that was charged over the last 6 months and the original policy amount restored, as there was no mention of an annual increase anywhere, before we accepted the policy. To reiterate, we would never have accepted it if either of us were aware, especially at 20% or more. We will be taking this further if not resolved.
