Underhanded tactics from Discovery
Submitted a claim for scratches on my car door caused by someone else. Quote from panelbeater came to over R7000, Discovery says my excess is R6000, so they only pay R1000?? What madness is this? That's less than my premium! Went and had a look at their Excess Annexure and they list Scratch and Dent excess as R500. Checked the email they sent and they logged the claim under Accidental Damage with the excess of R6000. This is the kind of underhanded greedy tactics they use to not have to pay. I'm already getting quotes from other insurers. You've lost a customer Discovery, but I'm just a drop in the bucket so I know you won't care.

Thank you again for reaching out to us about your claim and excess. We've checked your policy and can confirm that the claim was correctly logged with the relevant excess. The R500 excess you're referring to is specific to Scratch and Dent cover, which you don't have on your policy.
This is an optional benefit that clients can select on their policy at an additional cost to cover minor day to day damage. The damages covered under this optional benefit have to meet specific criteria in order to be covered through this.
We realise this may not be the outcome you would have liked but we hope we've been able to adequately explain it to correct any possible confusion.

29 Oct 2025, 13:40This is a blatant lie. I again went on the app and checked, I'm on the essential plan, and when I tap on the button on my plan, it lists scratch and dent under the essential plan with a R500 excess. So please, lie more and be ********* to your customers

We assure you, it’s not a lie, the R500 excess you're referring to is specific to Scratch and Dent cover, which is an optional benefit on our plans and was only launched in December 2024.
As per the Excess Annexure, it’s supposed to be read in conjunction with your Plan Guide, Plan Schedule and Benefit Limit Annexure. In the Plan Guide, Section 7: Vehicle, 7.4.7 Discovery Insure Scratch and Dent refers to the optional benefit and the details of cover related to this.
This optional benefit is what the Basic Excess: Scratch and Dent R500 excess refers to in the Excess Annexure, as does the line in the Benefit Limit Annexure: Scratch and Dent (if optional benefit is selected) R5000 limit.
As you don’t have the optional Scratch and Dent cover on your policy, this excess was not considered or applicable. Also, the R7000 quoted damage to your vehicle was more than would have been covered by the R5000 benefit limit had it been applicable.
