Unauthorised debits from Discovery Insurance
I had a Discovery Insurance policy which I cancelled in November 2017 after I received better quotes from a few other companies. As is required by Discovery- the tracking device fitted to my vehicle was removed on the 29th of November 2017.
I have since had no relationship with Discovery Insurance and received no communication from the comapany, yet on the 26th of January 2018 , am ammount of R1180 was debitted directly from my personal bank account. The transaction reference on my statement did not even say Discovery- hence I did not even know who had debitted my account. I queried this debit with my banker and lodged an unauthorised debit complaint at my bank, after this the Bank traced and provided me with the details a few days later of who had debitted my account. I was surprised to be told that it was Discovery Insurance. I had received no communication in any form from Discovery since I cancelled my policy.
It is tantamount to theft to use and abuse banking details I previously provided for genuine debits in this manner. Discovery insure did not even have the courtesy to email me or contact me about this debit prior to doing it. After a 25 minute phone call to Discovery Insure- which costed me R45 (since Discovery Insure charges at premium call rates on their ***phone line) - I was told that the debit was loaded mistakenly as it was thought that the DQ device was not removed- and now it reflects on their system that it was indeed removed and returned. To get this corrected however, the agent now wants me to email the following:
1. Copy of my ID 2. Copy of my Banking Statement.
I would not recommend Discovery insure to anyone as a company that cannot be trusted with my personal banking details cannot be trusted at all. And now to require my banking statement as well ID copy to fix this seems to not make the least of sense. The fact that Discovery can place debits without so much as a telephone call/sms or email, is deeply disturbing, (not to mention the fact that the banking sector allows such practice).
