Terrible service from Discovery Insure

Horrible service, unfairly and ********ly treated!

On 21 July 2016 I was in a car accident. The lady behind me did not watch where she was going and bumped into me and also pushed me into the vehicle that was in front of me. The initial process with the claim was easy and service was good. We were so sure that the car would be written off but to our surprise the damage was only R80’110.50, according to our contract with Discovery Insure the damage had to accede 70% of the retail value of the vehicle. The assessment was done by Net Asses. We had no choice but to accept. We then learned that the car was being fixed with pirate and used parts. We raised our concerns and we were informed that it was legal as the car was not under warrantee any longer. This was proofed by a letter from the Onbudsman. Today, almost 12 weeks (82 days) later I still do not have my car! In these days that have passed we had to make numerous phone calls and follow up and all we got was that they were ordering more parts and then waiting for these parts, which was not part of the original quote. Discovery did not once phone us and updated us on what was going on. We followed up with the panel beaters on a regular basis. On Friday, 30 September, the car was taken to VW Hatfield for wiring repairs and inspection. VW established that the power steering was not working and ordered a power steering control unit. The total for the part and labour amount to R16’622,34. The part will take another 3weeks before it is here and then the work still needs to be done. The vehicle has still not been driven so we are not able to know if there are any other additional problems. I then got suspicious and phoned the panel beater to find out what the total repair cost was to date and I was informed that the total damage cost was R128’828 and that was excluding the quotation from VW Hatfield. If you add all these together the total cost is R145’450.34 and this exceeds the 70% of the car value by far. The vehicle is insured for R168400. We requested that Discovery write the car off as this was not right. I had an accident free vehicle which was not caused by me. I now have to be happy with a second hand car because Net Asses did not do their work properly. Management from Discovery responded saying the car will not be written off and repairs will resume. We deserved to be paid the value of the car and what Discovery does with the car is their problem. They did not do the assessment properly from the beginning and no they are breaking their policy rules. I can understand an additional cost of R10’000 that was overlooked but not an additional R65’339.84. They can sell the car or do whatever, I do not care. They fixed the car and should bear the consciences. The car should have been written off since the beginning but Discovery said NO. Discovery chose the accessors and the panel beaters. Discovery kept on authorising extra parts and repairs on the car. We had no say and for most of it no knowledge as we were not kept up to date at all. Discovery now refuses to write off the car as they spent too much money to repair the car but this is not our fault and should not be our problem. We pay our premium every month and trusted that we would be treater fairly and correct. We will not take that car back. The damage was substantial and the car should have been written off at the beginning. We will not advise any one to take out insurance with Discovery as we have been treated unfairly and we will not leave it here. According to us this is not legal and we are taking the required steps to fight this.
