Steer clear of Discovery Insurance

I contacted Discovery Insure via e-mail to initiate a claim. After receiving a request for more information I responded and waited over a week for feedback. No response. I then logged a claim online and after two days of no response I contacted the call centre to only be told they would have to book in an assessment.

It took me two weeks just to be told that!

Three days after the assessment I phoned Discovery to find out what the outcome was, I was then told that the vehicle will not be covered as the repair is less than my excess. (Discovery increase the excess each year by the way) Yet I have an excess funder amount of R4,000 as per Discovery's "great" benefits to you as a client. I asked the consultant to utilise these funds and she said they cannot. I would have to pay cash to have the vehicle repaired and would not be able to use my excess funder to fund the minor damage? When I asked if I could approach the panelbeaters to check the quote I was told that Discovery gets a better quote than I would if I was approaching them privately. Seems fairly convenient that Discovery gets a lower quote than I do, ensuring that the repair is under my excess amount hence saving Discovery from parting with any cash and putting the responsibility onto me as a client to pay out of my pocket.

I have subsequently cancelled my Insurance with Discovery, I will lose the R4,000 that is sitting in my excess funder and I still have to pay out of my own pocket to have my vehicle repaired. Don't fall for the promise of all the benefits, their service and lodging of claims is slow and in my opinion you'll move to a different insurer when you experience their attitude towards paying out claims.

We apologize for the inconvenience and disappointment that you experienced in dealing with us recently.
The Excess Funder Account is a benefit that is part of our vitalitydrive program, and is used to cover motor vehicle and motorcycle excess that are equal or higher than the total excess amount on your plan.
If the claim amount is lesser than the excess, the Excess Funder Account cannot be used to cover said claim amount.
The benefit further allows you to withdraw 50% of the amount allocated in your Excess Funder, after your third plan anniversary.
However if you cancel your Discovery Insure Plan or Vitalitydrive benefit before your third anniversary, you will lose the Excess Funder Account benefit.
You can find this information under section 8.2 in your plan guide.

What Discovery Insure fails to mention is that they ensure that their "quotes for repair" are under the excess amount, hence ensuring that they don't have to pay for minor repairs.
Also Discovery cannot give an answer as to how their "quote" was under the excess amount and my three quotes from independent panelbeaters were all double that of Discovery's??
Then when I asked Discovery if they could send me their quote so that I could have my vehicle fixed at that lower price they said no my price would be higher as I am approaching their subcontractor as a private deal?
I honestly don't know how a company like Discovery Insure can be so blatant about what in my opinion is collusion.
Additionally I was told, after cancelling my insurance with Discovery, that a fitment team would be out this Thursday to come and remove the tracking device. I now receive an e-mail from Discovery saying I have to book in a fitment and take my vehicle in to have the tracking device removed.
Once again I will receive a standardised response from Discovery without addressing any of the issues or the shortcomings of their insurance product. And in the interim I will continue to advise everyone I know to steer clear of Discovery Insure.
