Pothole claim handled without regard for AWD drivetrain safety or manufacturer specifications

On 23 April 2026, my BMW X3 F25 xDrive20d struck a large pothole, simultaneously rupturing two run-flat tyres on the right-hand side of the vehicle. What followed was a three-week engagement with Discovery Insure that I can only describe as a failure to properly assess, understand, or address the full scope of damage. The approved repair scope replaces only the two right-side tyres. On an all-wheel drive vehicle, this creates simultaneous lateral tread variances of 3mm on the front axle and 6mm on the rear axle — both exceeding BMW's own published specification limits (SIB 36 12), which mandate a maximum of 2mm per axle. BMW's service documentation specifically identifies this configuration as a cause of transfer case malfunction and drivetrain failure. Despite raising this concern in writing on 29 April, providing detailed technical evidence including BMW's own service bulletins, and submitting a formal objection, Discovery Insure's claims team did not engage with the technical argument at any point. Responses acknowledged my concerns in general terms but never addressed the specific xDrive drivetrain risk. The assessment also shows no mechanical inspection was conducted despite an impact severe enough to rupture two run-flat tyres. The assessment records R0.00 under mechanical work, yet the assessor photographed the suspension area during his visit. After three weeks, two formal written objections, and a detailed technical submission, the approved scope remains unchanged. I have now lodged a formal complaint with the National Financial Ombuds Scheme South Africa (NFOSa / OSTI), reference ID-X7XYQPP5. I have approached this process in good faith throughout. I provided technical evidence, proposed a constructive resolution, and gave Discovery every opportunity to engage. Asiphe, who is the person dealing with my matter, promised to call me on 3 separate occasions, and never called. The failure here is not only one of communication — it is one of technical competence and a willingness to approve a repair that leaves the vehicle in a worse mechanical condition than before the incident. She constantly refers to betterment in the policy terms, but fails to understand that leaving my vehicle in a worse mechanical condition with safety risks that was not there before the incident, is a legal breach. I would not recommend Discovery Insure to any owner of an all-wheel drive vehicle.

R6,000 excess for replacing two tyres at R9,206 (R3,999 RF tyre + R5,207 RR tyre)
+ R5,532 betterment for a tyre of nett price R5,207 due to wear.

So I must pay R11,532 for tyres quoted to me for R9,206??
Where is the value that my insurance premiums are paying for?

And only THEN you will do inspections for other damages to my suspension, wheel bearings, control arms and others?

Good day Bevan

Thank you again for reaching out to us and for your patience while we escalated your concerns.

We’ve received feedback from our Claims Management team and Senior Executives on the outcome of your escalation. They’ve advised that, after an in-depth review, they agree that the betterment cost should not be app**** in this instance and have since removed it from the claim.

Asiphe was provided with the updated decision, and we’ve been advised that she has reached out to you to discuss this. Also, that based on the revised decision you’ve opted to have the claim paid out to you as cash. We hope we’ve been able to adequately address your concerns but please feel free to reach out to us should you require any further assistance.

I've opted to have the cost of the tyres paid out yes, but this is not the entire claim. Refer to the second sentence in my review - "properly assess, understand, or address the full scope of damage"

Firstly,
Please confirm that "the full cost of the tyres" include:
1) the 2 replacement tyres, 2) the wheel balancing of each when fitted to the rim, 3) the wheel alignment when fitted to the car.
[If yes, the wheel balancing is not costed in the report so I'd like that added and itemised by your service provider]

The second sentence in my reveiw above states: "...to properly assess, understand, or address the full scope of damage."

So...
Please also confirm that this step only addresses the tyre replacement, but does not address the "failure to properly assess, understand, or address the full scope of damage".

Asiphe has constantly stated that once the tyres have been replaced, the inspection for damages will then be done and any hidden damages detected will be fixed against this claim. I AM paying the excess related to the claim, and the claim is for all damages caused as a result of this incident and this claim. Please confirm that this is in order.

If you can confirm the above, I'll be happy with the outcome and I will retract my formal complaint with the The Ombudsman for Short Term Insurance and National Financial Ombuds Scheme South Africa, reference ID-X7XYQPP5.

Hi Bevan

As confirmed by Asiphe in her response to your email with the above queries:

1) the full cost of the tyres includes the 2 replacement tyres as well as the balancing and alignment of these.
2) Relating to the assessment of the full scope of damages, following the tyre replacement, if further damage is picked up this is to be compiled in a report along with pictures and sent to us for review against the current claim. This could be picked up either during the replacement and alignment process or, as you mentioned, during your inspection at a BMW specialist service centre.

We hope the team were able to adequately address your queries and concerns but please feel free to reach out should you need any further assistance.
