Longtime Discovery Client Betrayed in Time of Crisis
For over 10 years, I have been a loyal and fully integrated client of Discovery — from Discovery Medical Aid (who supported us during the birth of our twins), to Discovery Insure (vehicle insurance), and most recently, Discovery Bank.
Given this long-standing relationship, I expected to be treated fairly when we lodged a motor vehicle claim following a traumatic incident.
Instead, Discovery Insure repudiated the claim, relying on internal interpretations that directly contradicted an independent crash expert’s report which I commissioned at my own cost. The evidence included: • A digital data download from the vehicle, • An expert forensic report, • A sworn affidavit from a passenger, • And video footage.
Despite this, Discovery remained unmoved.
We escalated the matter to the National Financial Ombud Scheme (NFO). Their conclusion?
The matter involved a complex dispute of fact between experts, and therefore could not be resolved within the Ombud’s mandate. They advised that the case must now proceed through the court system.
This is not a dismissal on merit — it’s an admission that the evidence was too technical for the Ombud to rule on. Still, Discovery has refused to reconsider or meaningfully engage.
As a result, I now face: • Severe financial burden • Mental and emotional fatigue • And a deep sense of betrayal from a brand I once trusted with my family’s wellbeing
I am now preparing for legal action to pursue justice.
I am posting here because I believe other long-term clients deserve to know how Discovery treats you when you’re no longer just paying — but asking for help.
I remain open to Discovery Insure doing the right thing. But until then, I cannot in good conscience recommend them to anyone seeking fair, reliable cover during life’s most vulnerable moments.
