locked garage with alarm is higher risk then public parking.

I recently moved from Milnerton to a secure area in Constantia, my car went from a open parking area to a locked garage with an alarm and armed response. I phoned discovery insure to inform them of my change in address and update them on the new security measures for my car.

I was completely shocked when they told me they are increasing my premium by R100 a month. When i asked why they told me that my car is now considered to be in a risky area. They are telling me that parking in the open in Milnerton is safe and parking in a locked armed garage at night in Constantia in a closed off area is not safe.

I asked them for the crime stats they based there assessment on they refused to tell me telling me that the police crime stats that they and everyone use are intellectual property and i cannot have them. Never mind that crime stats are distributed to the public every year and updated monthly. He even had the audacity to tell me that if i went to KFC and asked for their recipe they wouldn't give it to me either. So apparently discovery considers my car to be the equivalent to a piece of chicken....well since they cant tell the difference between chicken and a car maybe they cant tell the difference between a car parked out in the open in milnerton and a secure alarmed environment in Constantia. it was as amusing as him telling me, and i am quoting here his words "My risk is also assessed by the fact that i may go to a drive-in in constantia and order a burger" I kid you not. Please listen to the call discovery, i am sure it will provide you with plenty of laughter.

The gentleman, who claimed he was a manager told me that there is nothing he is going to do, if i am not happy i can go speak to the Ombudsman. but they are not changing there minds. he also told me they don't look at the value of the car or your individual risk profile, they look at the group profile. So i asked if i parked my car in Constantia in the middle of the road with the keys in the ignition and the doors open it wouldn't make any difference to my premium as it is assessed as a group. He didn't have an answer for that.

On a serious note Discovery...i have been a long time customer of yours, i have medical aid with you, i have a credit card with you, i have insurance with you and yearly you bump up my premium, i am more then double what my premium was 4 years ago, and now that i have changed my address and circumstances to a more favorable lower risk you are penalizing me. You are not giving me any reason to stay with you, you are pushing me away with this, and if i leave because of insurance I am taking my banking and medical aid with...and that includes all of my business, and just remember I am one of the decision makers at work that decides who we give our medical insurance to. So think carefully if R100 is worth the loss of hundreds of thousands of rands.

Hopefully someone who has the intelligence to make decisions, and the authority contacts me shortly before i finalize a new quote from another car insurance company.

Clock is ticking...
