Generic Parts vs Original Parts What Do We Pay Insurance For???
Logged a claim on the Discovery insurance app on the 8th December "Windscreen" damage....The claim was approved without any issues...Its only once the glass company called me to discuss the claim i was advised that the windscreen would be replaced with GENERIC windsreen as the car is no longer under warranty and that they only authorise original replacement on approval by there management team
On the the 10th December i responded to "Matome Rathiba" advising him that im not happy with the outcome decision as my car is currently fitted with the original windscreen and do not want to have it replaced with generic glass (This is what we pay for right? Pathetic and poor customer service at its best as no feedback or response received from Matome up until the 22nd December whereby had to call and leave numerous msgs
This is the problem i have with Discovery Insurance whereby they are relying on an Ombudsman ruling dating back to 2009 and applying that blanket rule towards my claim???? The ruling does however state that "As I quote from the complaint: “The Ombudsman stresses that no hard and fast rule can be laid down and that each case must be assessed on its own individual merit”
Was further advised by Matome that in the event my is involved in an accident e.g headlights is damaged" the car will be fitted with generic parts as per the Ombudsman ruling...Discovery Insure please tell me where this is stated in my contract or where better yet, tell me where i was advised of this from the date of inception ....
So my questions is: -What do we then pay insurance for? As none of the above is mentioned in our contract when signing with Discovery? IF thats the case we might was well replace the parts ourselves using generic parts? - The obudman ruling reads" "The Ombudsman, Mr. Brian Martin, says "the cost of repairing damaged motor vehicles has risen significantly over time and is a major factor in the high cost of motor vehicle insurance. If premiums are to be kept at reasonable levels and increases in premiums within similar bounds" "he use of second hand parts, where appropriate, is also to be encouraged as a cost saving measure" --Based on the above, who is saving ito COST... ME? or the INSURANCE Company??? I would really love to the see the premium cost reduction calculator that shows how much less im paying because of this As per my understanding the my monthly premiums is relating to the value of my car and replace and including annual price increases? SO WHO WINS AT THE END OF THE DAY???? Taking my monthly premiums without hesitation and then wanting to replace with generic parts when its actually time to claim???What a JOKE
5.18 | Method of providing benefits (indemnity) and betterment We may repair, replace, reinstate or pay cash to you in respect of the amount of damages or, where appropriate, use any combination of these methods. You will have to pay a contribution where the condition and/or value of the insured property is improved as a result of repair or replacement. You will be responsible for the excess. You may need to sign a release or discharge before we finalise a claim.
Betterment The purpose of insuring property is to financially restore you to the position you were in before the loss or damage to the property. In principle, you should not be placed in a better position than you were before the loss or damage. In other words, the insurer shall not compensate you for more than the value of the insured property
Based on your feedback, you are not putting me in the same position before the damages occurred. Im not happy with having generic glass fitted, if the car had generic glass fitted currently I would not have an issue with proceeding as such
My request is to keep the car/get the car to what is was (original) before the damages ocurred. DO NOT WANT GENERIC GLASS FITTED ON MY CAR, GIVE ME WHAT I PAY FOR...
Next steps..Ombudsman, Social SITES to make Consumers aware of what they actually paying for when taking out insurance with DISCOVERY INSURE
Where in clause 5.18 does it stipulate the use of generic parts unless my english is failing me?
Section 5 of your plan guide reads:
?5.18 | Method of providing benefits

The cost difference between the generic glass and Original glass is +-R2000 minus my access.... so will be R1250 and you guys are choosing the cheaper option because of?
I will definately not recommend Discovey Insure to Anyone and will be searching for a new Insurance come the new year
My premiums from date of inception? Does not even come close to the cost of repairs. Take note that this is my first claim on the car.
Relying on a ruling from 2009 and we in 2020?, where it clearly states
The ruling does however state that "As I quote from the complaint: “The Ombudsman stresses that no hard and fast rule can be laid down and that each case must be assessed on its own individual merit”
