Flood damaged BMW 435i - Claim Number ***

On the 25th July 2016 we experienced a freak storm in Durban, and unfortunately my BMW 435 fell victim to this storm. Like many other vehicles my car was damaged by the storm. I had to sadly leave my vehicle overnight at the scene of the tradgedy and went back the next morning to meet the bmw technician, who was waiting at my vehicle. My car was undrivable as the engine had seized. One look at the engine of the vehicle and the technician told me that the engine was blown and more than likely there will be damage to the electronics of the vehicle as well. My vehicle was towed to a nearby BMW dealership. The assesor from discovery came through a few days later to assess the vehicle. The very next day I drove to the dealership to check up on my vehicle and had a chance to chat to the service advisor at BMW. I asked him what was the quote given to repair my vehicle. He told me that they have given the assesor a quote of R284000 as they had to replace the engine, he further went on to tell me that this was just to start the vehicle and that they advised the assesor to provide for additional costs as there would probably be damages to the electronics of the vehicle and BMW cannot assess the costs until the vehicle is started. This was the first thing that uspet me as to how Discovery have been handling my claim - The assessor only submitted a quote of R284000 to Discovery to have my vehicle repaired and there was no mention of possible additional costs. Thereafter I regularly visited the BMW dealership to check in on my vehicle :(. I asked the BMW advisor about the status of the other flood damaged BMWs. He told me that all the other BMWs that came in due to the floods were already written off by the respective insurance companies and that my vehcile was the only one still awaiting a decision. And let me mention at this point that some of the assessed cost of some of the damages on these vehicles were less than mine and only equated to around 50% of the respective vehicles value and some were even insured by so called inferior insurance companies:(. The BMW advisor also informed me that should my vehicle be repaired, BMW will not honor the guarantee on any subsequent faults that may arise at a later stage due to water that may have crept up to other parts of the vehicle, Examples he gave me were erosion caused over time due to water damage, this is something that cannot be identified at the early stages. He also stated that a note will be placed on the BMW system stating that the engine was replaced in the car due to water damage and this will pose a problem for me at a later stage should I want to sell or trade in my vehicle. I investigated these points and spoke to various service advisors and salesman from various BMW dealerships and all confirmed what this service advisor had told me. I informed Discovery of this and still they showed no interest in my concerns. What is further frustrating around the 16th or 17 Aug, I called Discovery to enquire about the status of my claim and a consultant informed me that the vehicle is going to be written off, later that day I received a call from my claims administrator at Discovery saying that that was a mistake and that the engine in my vehicle is going to replaced and the vehicle is not going to be written off - HOW UNPROFESSIONAL!!!!!. So I told her my concerns about the fact that further faults may occur related to the water damage, the cost of which will be for my account, and that a note will be placed on the BMW system about the water damage. She responded saying that she will forward my concerns to the assessors and management and will get back to me. Many calls from me to discovery later, and after many emails from the claims administrator saying that she hasn't heard back from management and will advise me as soon as she does, I get a call from the claims administrator on the 26th August saying that management has made a decision regarding my claim and wait for this ............... They have decided that they will not write off the vehicle and they have also decided that the engine is not going to be replaced but is going to be repaired. Come on Discovery, for a company that I have been so pleased to be associated with, your asset insurance department is surely letting the company down.

One month down the line, I am still sitting in limbo with no solution in sight......... Please help!!!! Really disappointed !!!!!!!

Hi Sakhe,

Please advise as to what is going on with my claim. When I spoke to you on Monday last week you advised me that the claim has been authorised and that discovery will be replacing the engine on the car. On wednesday last week I called the BMW dealership to enquire about my vehicle and they had told me that they have not received any authorisation from Discovery. I immediately called Discovery and was told by the consultant that my claim was sent to the manager for authorisation and that this manager normally has a 24 hr turnaround time. Almost a week later, I call Discovery again, as the BMW dealership still have not received any authorisation from Discovery, and I get told by the consultant that my claim is still awaiting authorisation.

Sakhe I am truly frustrated now, I cannot spend so much of my valuable time on millions of calls to Discovery only to be given the same lines ......... " awaiting authorisation!!!!", "file with management!!!!!"

As you are aware, I had to return the car hire yesterday, and you had so kindly told me last week that I will need to make my own arrangements for a vehicle after the 12/09 as discovery cannot extend the car hire anymore.

Please tell me what is going on!!!!!!!!!!
