Dont be fooled by discovery "discounts".
Don't be fooled about the so called discovery Insure Drive benefits. I need to purchase a car seat for my little one was very glad to see the up to 25% discount on car seats at Babies R Us. I am on silver so was on entitled to 15% discount, which is still significant. So I found a car seat and the shop manager told me the discount isn't applicable to the Joie Range.I then found another one a( for R2999_ - with discount R2549) and I was then told this seat is in the December catalog and is currently R500 off so it also isn't applicable. The only ones available were cheap looking, very plastic car seats that I don't trust( Discovery obviously not concerned very about child safety trying to encourage the cheapest car seat). I then checked the Chelino website and the same car seat is R2499 directly from them. So discovery and Babies R us are offering a discount but then marking everything up, and still charging more more than market related with the discount. if it wasn't on the R500 catalog discount i would have paid R2975 for it with my 15% discount. if I was on diamond with the 25% i would pay R2625 So in no circumstance does it make sense to buy from Babies R Us with the discount voucher.
So discovery claims they are assisting you purchase a car seat, but when in actually trying to get you to purchase from a supplier that over charging you even with the discount. So is discovery actually contributing or do they have ***** deals with retailers?
I have noticed the same with some of their other vitality "discounts". Shop around and you will see the discounts are a farce.

It is to be noted that the main objective of the benefit is to encourage drivers with children to get accustomed to using car seats. This ties in with our core value and unique selling preposition of "creating a nation of safe driving". We partner with leading brands who offer affordability and a nationwide accessibility. the car seats on the promotion meet the SABS standards and comply with all the safety regulations regardless of their design and value.

There are specific baby seats that are offered on a discounted rate to Discovery Insure clients. The offer is therefore not applicable on all baby seats and the list is available on the website.

- The second seat found to the value of R2999 was in fact on promotion in store and therefore the client would still have received a discount on the Chelino seat. Unfortunately the Discovery Insure offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other promotional offer.
- With regards to the Chelino website, this seems to be the manufacturer or wholesaler and therefore are probably able to offer a more competitive price as compared to Babies R Us who are a retailer thus would add a mark up to their prices.
- We unfortunately do not have any control over the respective brands pricing.

It’s all noted and understood you don’t have control of the brands pricing but why choose to partner with a company that is over pricing. If discovery are contributing 25% of the cost of the car seat why should it matter if the car seat is onpromotion or what brand it is. So discovery aren’t actually contributing but they obviously have a deal with babies r us. If you were serious about wanting people to use a car seat you should offer the discount irrespective of what car seat as long as it’s meets safety requirements.
my intention of the post is not to ask for anything, rather just to highlight to other customers that the offered discount aren’t actually discounts as the retailer with whom discovery have partnered have simply increased their prices to cover the discount. I have shopped around extensively and babies R Us are more expensive on the car seats. The chelino for reference if you search around is priced at R2499 on the chelino website and I found another retailer in rosebank selling at the same price. Babies R us are selling at their claimed discounted rate for R2999. So it might not be discovery it could be the retailer but the intention of my post is to share my experience with other buyers so they are not fooled by the offered discounts. As in most cases they don’t actually exist. Its simply a ploy to get you to shop there, the prices are inflated to cover the discount. I don’t know what arrangement there is between babies r us and discovery but I’m sure someone winning and it’s not us the consumers.
For reference . I have done the same checks with discovery heathy gear at Sportsmans warehouse. Check the price of a Thule urban glide 1 at sportsman and then
Check on takealot and cape union mart. If you on the 25% cash back (limited to R1000 ) a month you land up paying the same, if you only on 15% cash back you pay more.
I am happy with discovery in general and the Innovation they bring to the market but my message is just for other customers beware, don’t just accept what they say is a discount. You could actually land up paying more.
