Discovery uses old parts on old cars

Owners of older vehicles BEWARE of short-term insurer Discovery Insure! If your car is a few years old and is beyond its manufacturer's warrantee, this insurer, through their assessment company Net Assess, will try to force you to accept against your will that the panel beater of their choice will use second hand body parts from a breakers yard in the repair of your vehicle.
The initial assessment of the damage to my vehicle by Net Assess was incomplete and totally off the mark. Initial costs were estimated around R15 000, but snowballed to R30 000 once the vehicle was at the panel beaters. The estimated 14 days for repair also became nearly one month.
If Discovery Insure wants to be honest and transparent, they should inform all new and existing customers with older vehicles that are out of warrantee, that they intend to use second hand so called \refurbished"parts on their vehicles when these need to be repaired after a collision.
"""

Hello Hans_Alink,

It is common practice for an insurer to use second hand or refurbished parts on a vehicle that is out of warranty. This is not a fact that we hide from the public or our clients. In the event of a claim It is our responsibility to place the client back into the position that they were prior to the incident. If we had to purchase a brand new part on a vehicle that is almost 10 years old and out of warranty, like in the case of your vehicle, we would be placing you in a better position than you were prior to the incident.
In addition to the above we must also take a holistic view at the impact using brand new parts on all repairs would have on our business.
If we had to use brand new parts for the repair of every vehicle out of warranty, we would in turn need more funds to pay for the cost of these parts and that cost would eventually filter through to the premiums we charge all our clients.
Now, if we consider all of the above bearing in mind that all insurance is based upon division of risk, this is a decision we have had to take to ensure that the business remains sustainable and that we protect our entire client base from unnecessary premium increases.
