Discovery Insure Sensor – Unfair Deductions and Extremely Frustrating Experience

I am extremely frustrated with the Discovery driving sensor and regret ever agreeing to install it. Today alone, I lost 16 driving points for alleged “cell phone activity.” I made a call while stationary in a parking lot, and once I started driving the call was connected via Bluetooth, completely hands-free. Despite this, the sensor still penalised me. On another occasion, my son was seated in the back playing a game on my phone, while the phone was not in my hands at all, yet I was again penalised for cell phone usage. This clearly shows how inaccurate and flawed this device is, as it cannot distinguish between the driver actually using the phone and a passenger using it. To make matters worse, the sensor frequently flags hard braking, even in situations where braking is unavoidable and necessary for safety. Recently, I was penalised for hard braking when an Uber bike skipped a four-way stop, forcing me to brake suddenly to avoid an accident. Penalising defensive driving in dangerous situations is not only unfair, but completely illogical. I am extremely frustrated with the Discovery driving sensor and regret ever agreeing to install it. Penalising defensive driving in dangerous situations is not only unfair, but completely illogical. Instead of encouraging safer driving, this device creates constant anxiety and irritation. It feels as though I am being punished for situations beyond my control and for technology that simply does not work accurately. The sensor is extremely annoying, unreliable, and unfair, and I genuinely regret installing it. I expected a system that rewards responsible driving, not one that continuously deducts points based on incorrect assumptions and unavoidable real-world scenarios. I hope Discovery seriously reviews the accuracy and fairness of this device, as the current experience is deeply disappointing Instead of encouraging safer driving, this device creates constant anxiety and irritation. .While I acknowledge the intention behind the programme, I fundamentally disagree with the position that any phone activity detected while a vehicle is in motion — regardless of who is using the phone — should be my responsibility as the policyholder. This is my personal cell phone, which I pay for. If my son uses my phone as a passenger, that has nothing to do with my driving behaviour and should not be monitored or penalised by Discovery. The expectation that a phone cannot be used at all in a moving vehicle, irrespective of who is handling it, is unreasonable and intrusive. In addition, as a Senior Relationship Manager, there are times when I may need to take an important call via Bluetooth. Taking a hands-free call has no impact on my safety or the safety of others on the road. I do not text and drive — ever — and I take road safety seriously. Penalising responsible, hands-free behaviour feels excessive and disproportionate.Given this experience, I have decided that I no longer want the Vitality Drive sensor in my vehicle. I do not appreciate being dictated to on how a personal device I pay for may be used, particularly when it does not compromise safety. As a result, I will be reviewing my insurance options and will be looking at alternative providers going forward.Thank you for your response, but this matter has highlighted a fundamental mismatch between the programme’s approach and my expectations as a client.

Good day

The sensor does not detect who is holding or using the phone. Instead, it monitors movement and interaction on the primary paired device in the vehicle. This means:

If your phone — the one paired to your sensor — is being touched, moved, or actively used during a trip, the system assumes it’s the driver.
It cannot distinguish between the driver and passengers.

This is why:

A hands-free Bluetooth call sometimes still triggers a penalty if the phone screen is activated or moved before or during the start of the trip.
When your son was using your phone in the back seat, the system unfortunately still saw this as “driver interaction,” because it cannot identify that the phone was not in your hands.
