Discovery Insure rejecting valid claim
I have been a Discovery Insure client for around five years and have, generally, been fairly happy with their service. About four years ago, I lodged a claim for a collapsed built-in bookcase at my home. The claim was approved and a contractor appointed by Discovery Insure, who carried out the work.
Now, the bookcase is collapsing again and I have propped it up with a stick to prevent it breaking and falling on somebody, so I put in another claim, including a quote and damage report from a contractor.
Yesterday, I received a terse email from the Discovery Insure Consultant saying,
" Good day
Kindly note that as per the report you have sent, there is no insured peril therefore I will be rejecting your claim.
Insurance covers insurable perils and not damages , with the attached there isn’t an insured peril.
I responded by saying that there is an insurable peril as, if that bookcase collapses on somebody working at the desk below it, they could be badly hurt.
I have received no response from her. The value of the claim is very small and should, surely, seeing that this claim was honoured before and obviously not repaired to a high enough standard by the Discovery Insure contractor, this claim should be honoured??
