Discovery Insure Refusing Functional Replacement for Home Theatre Projector

Discovery Insure, you are failing to uphold the basic principle of indemnity.

My claim pertains to the accidental damage of my Optoma UHD40 4k home theatre projector. I have followed every protocol, but your claims department is attempting to force a non-functional replacement on me based on a technicality, which is utterly unacceptable.

The Problem: Non-Functional Replacement Offer

My original projector, the Optoma UHD40, was installed with specific technical requirements, notably its throw ratio and vertical lens shift. The installation environment (ceiling mount, screen position) is fixed.

I requested a payout for a functionally equivalent model, the Optoma UHZ55, which has the necessary vertical lens shift and throw ratio to integrate seamlessly into my existing home theatre setup without requiring expensive and invasive renovations to the ceiling and screen mounting.

Your final offer, however, is a moderated cash amount of R28,862 and the suggested replacement of an Optoma UHD38X projector. I explicitly communicated to your agent that the UHD38X is NOT a functional equivalent because it lacks the critical vertical lens shift and has a different throw ratio.

The UHD38X will not work in my current installation. Your offer is, therefore, a replacement of an object, but a refusal to replace the functionality and system integrity of my home theatre, forcing me to either accept an inferior product or completely rebuild my installation setup.

The Policy Failure and Demand

Your agent claims the limitation is because the projector was not "specified" under my Household Contents. However:

I was NEVER informed during the policy initiation phase that a cap existed on large, non-specified electronic items, particularly where the replacement must meet specific technical and installation requirements. The fundamental purpose of insurance is to restore the insured to their prior condition. Offering a projector that is technically incompatible with the fixed installation is a breach of this principle.

I demand an immediate review of this claim by a senior manager who understands the principle of functional indemnity. I am not asking for an upgrade; I am demanding a model that meets the non-negotiable installation requirements of the original unit.

My demand is clear: Pay out the cash equivalent required to purchase the Optoma UHZ55 as this is the model I have told you multiple times is the only compatible model with my restricted installation requirements.

I require a resolution within 48 hours. Failing this, I will be escalating this matter to the Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance (OSTI).

DISCOVERY INSURE: Honour your commitment and stop offering non-functional, inadequate replacements.

Reference Models:

Damaged: Optoma UHD40 Functionally Required Replacement: Optoma UHZ55 Discovery’s Non-Functional Offer: Optoma UHD38X

This process has been absolutely insulting to me as your repair company made the first mistake of not even providing you with a model number to my original projector. The claim was submitted on the 10th of this month and the process has been absolutely unnecessary dragged out.
