Discovery Insure no regard for clients safety!

For an insurance company who gives reward for customers who drives safely, it is shocking how it goes about cutting corners when assessing claims, and even to the extent of the customers safety.

We currently in our second dealing with Discovery Insure.

The first time we were driving for over a week without Discovering fixing a window on the drivers side broken in an attempted hijacking. My husband made a plan to cut a hole in the window (we had smash and grab on) and placed a piece of Perspex in, so that the hole was closed and that one can kind of see through the window to look in the side mirror. Not very safe! Discovery Insure approved an amount of R846 to be fixed in Pretoria West (we live in Centurion). They had no idea when the window will be available to install. We will have to wait for the window, when the car would have to go to the panel beater for a few days.

I drove to PG Glass (who quoted R1949.40), which informed me that they’ll order and next day it would be fixed! No needing to drive like we did for over a week (unsafely) and be without a car for a few days (and drive out the petrol to Pretoria West), for as little as R1103.40 difference. After a nasty letter to them, Discovery did end up paying for PG Glass, and all was forgiven.

Until now…

We had an incident with our caravan with major structural damage. Discovery towed it in. They got someone to go and quote (again not someone close by…), who gave a very cheap quote, ONLY fixing cosmetic damage and minor structural. We highlighted this to Discovery. Asked them to use the people who actually build these caravans, got a quote ourselves, with full list of damage. They said no, they are going with the CHEAP QUOTE. This after we told them that the guy who did their quote left the caravan door open, because he could not get it closed (due to the damage), and he did not even address the door in his quote (which he clearly saw). It appears to us, that Discovery thinks it is OK to repair cosmetic damage and not structural. Even after we told them it would put our safety at risk.

What are we to do now? Discovery will not listen to reason. I think it is necessary that people know that this is standard practice (for it is already our second time this happened). We joined Discovery insure, even though they cost as more than our previous insurer (we pay R4440pm to Discovery insure alone, not even taking their other projects into consideration), but thinking they must be good, as we have no problems with Discovery Medical. Well, all I can say: Very disappointing! I’m starting to wonder if we not going to have the same problems with the other projects…
