Discovery Insure and Handling of Third-Party Claims

In October 2024, I was involved in a motor vehicle accident where the at-fault driver, insured by Discovery Insure, admitted liability. The driver exited a shopping center parking lot without stopping, colliding with my vehicle’s rear door and fender as I turned into the lot with the right of way. We reported the incident to the police and processed the claim through Discovery. I submitted three repair quotes and required documentation. A week later, an auto body shop was authorized by the insurers representative to repair my vehicle, which I collected two weeks later. I was not consulted by Discovery Insure in this process and accepted that the instruction issued to the body shop by Discovery’s agent was tacit acknowledgement of 100% cover, and would not have proceeded had I known their true intentions. In June 2025, the shop informed me they hadn’t been paid, stating Discovery would pay me directly to settle with them - eight months after the accident. Discovery’s agent was unresponsive, ignoring calls and emails. After three weeks and threats to visit their offices, I was told a settlement would be calculated. Discovery then claimed their client was 80% liable and I was 20% liable, demanding I pay R16,000 without prior consultation. I emailed them three weeks ago, but have received no response. Discovery’s handling of this claim is unacceptable and suggests potential financial issues.
