Discovery Insure

With the hailstorms that caused havoc in Cape Town and surrounds during the month of February 2018, my Vredekloof property's rooftiles took quite a beating as clearly can be seen on the photos taken by my tenants. The tenants only realised it a couple of weeks after the storm, when one of the kids' tennis ***** landed on the roof. It is quite understandable as you don't climb onto your roof often... - and it just states the fact that there was no reason to get onto the roof as nothing alarmed them to do so. The rooftiles were all in perfect order as the tenants had no problem with leaks, loose tiles etc - they immediately sent me the photos stating that it was clearly damaged by the hail as the impact of the hail could clearly be seen on the photos. I sent it through to Discovery Insure who commissioned 2 independent companies to do the assessment. The verdict by Discovery Insure is that the claim is denied and the damage of the roof tiles is due to wear and tear! I do not agree with this at all - if the house was an insurance risk due to the 'old roof tiles' - surely Discovery would not have insured it! Wear and tear does not happen overnight - where as the hail damage did! The house is in very good condition like all the houses in the Vredekloof area.
