Discovery Home Insurance is the absolute worst in the industry
It appears that Discovery Insure tends to approve smaller claims while rejecting larger ones. This raises questions about whether there is an internal policy or limit set by actuaries to deny claims above a certain amount, thereby prioritizing profit over customer service. Seems like Discovery tends invest more money in actuaries , underwriters , claims manager sand assesors to migigate claims rather then pay out claims to clients who diligently pay month after month , year after year. It would seem there is a predetermined outcome for larger claims, suggesting a internal policy written for all processes within the Discovery home insurance division. We recently experienced significant rainfall in the Western Cape, The intense rainfall led to water ingress into the bedroom, causing water to leak from various light fittings in the ceiling. Videos taken clearly shows the substantial amount of water penetrating our bedroom, proving that this was due to an unforeseen and fortuitous event. We strongly disagreed with Discovery's findings and incorrect assertions that the damages are due to a lack of maintenance and/or wear and tear. Maintenance repairs was done on 2 April 2024. This demonstrates and proves that we had taken the necessary precautions within our means to mitigate and prevent any losses. However, if insurers fail to honour any roof repairs, it is common industry practice that in the event of maintenance issues to a roof (as a proximate cause), the roof repairs would be excluded, and the RESULTANT damages would still be attended to, subject to the incident being sudden and unforeseen. This has been tested and ruled on by the Ombudsman for Short Term Insurance (OSTI). I have observed a noticeable decline in service quality and an increase in pricing after initial attractive offers. This has resulted in a perception that Discovery lures clients with competitive pricing and value-added products, only to increase prices and reduce service levels later. Another recent experience we encountered , where it took three months to resolve a simple geyser issue, with multiple come-backs due to poor workmanship from insurance appointed service providers. This is not the level of service I expected from a reputable insurer or paying for. Multiple service providers called and visited (at Discovery's expense) for the same repair, indicating poor management and control of the process. Overall, Discovery has become so monopolized and profit-driven that customer service is neglected. It is time to consider alternatives.
