Dealing with Discovery Insure was the most traumatic part of my *******!!

A firearm was shoved in my face in traffic on my way home one day after work and three armed men demanded that I hand over my Cellphone and my wedding ring.

I comp**** as I was fearing for my life and after all...I have insurance...

Upon contacting Discovery Insure to place a claim, they indicated that regardless of the fact that I pay a monthly premium for R63,000 worth of "portable possession insurance"...a cellphone and a ring apparently isn't portable enough and isn't covered by this.

This is a classic example of an insurer looking for reasons not to pay out claims. They found a loophole in the contract which states that only items SPECIFICALLY mention can be claimed for, but they didn't ask for this when they setup my premium for R63,000 worth of cover. When asked what is covered they mentioned items like jackets and a handbags...other than having a handbag made of extinct Cape Lion skin...how is it possible to have items to the value of R63k and not include a phone or a ring? I do not own any possessions worth that much if my ring and phone is not included.

I pay Discovery almost R10k a month for Home and Health insurance, but when asking for R15k after a traumatic experience is too much to ask.

Even though Discovery was the cheapest option for our insurance, the savings I make every month has now been more than offset by this loss. So cheapest definitely doesn't mean best.

In fairness I have to mention that after about 3 weeks of negotiation, Discovery did offer a R5k contribution but I do not think I am being unreasonable to claim R15k from a R63k pot. Effectively I was paid out 8% of my insured value...

I would recommend that people are wary of Discovery Insure.
