Creating better driving habits

I recently activated insurance on my vehicle through Discovery Insure and a device was installed according to their requirements. What I don't understand is how drivers are penalised for 'severe' braking events. I can appreciate that they want drivers to be alert and encourage you to keep a safe following distance as well as be mindful of your surroundings so that you can be able to react to situations in time. But what if you do all of those things and something unpredictable happens and the only way you can avoid it, is by braking 'severely'? Points are deducted irrespective of the reason for braking. Do they expect drivers not to brake 'severely', even if it could have prevented a collision, or running over a child dashing into the road from behind a parked vehicle.
