Complaint
I recently submitted a claim to Discovery Car Insurance for a rear bumper replacement due to some idiot that reversed into my vehicle while parked at Builders Warehouse in Rivonia. I submitted a claim, the claim was authorised got the claim number. I then informed Discovery that it was not convenient for me to go to a repair centre in Rivonia and could I go nearer to where I live. I got a phone call from Discovery to inform me that they would pay me, and I could have it repaired anywhere. The amount payed into my account was just over 6700. I then went and got a quote from Nissan and the quote was over 16000 just for the bumper without the fitment. I then contacted Discovery and explained what a new bumper would cost and that the amount they payed me was not even enough to purchase the bumper. I was told that my vehicle is more than 5 yrs old and they only fit a second hand bumper. I pay the amount they ask of me every month without fail, via debit order. I have to now pay 21340 to purchase a new bumper and to have it installed. They quick to take your money but try and find any excuse not to pay.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Our apologies for any frustration or inconvenience caused.
The use of aftermarket parts is permitted in the industry at large and the Ombud for Short Term Insurance has allowed for this on the basis that it should not compromise the safety of the vehicle. This ruling took place in 2009.
We consider the year model and if the vehicle is under manufacture warranty in our merit for OEM use.
unless the vehicle is within these criteria, aftermarket parts may be considered.
In your case, the vehicle is out of warranty, therefore the assessor has allowed for second hand and local parts.
We are sorry that we could not provide you with a different outcome to your query.
