Cancellation of Discovery Insure motor vehicle policy

During the end of February 2019, my family and I suffered a very personal tragedy which necessitated me looking very carefully at finances, and created a huge amount of emotional stress. I had recently received notification from Discovery of a 7% annual increase on my car insurance policy so I decided to shop around a bit for car insurance. But honestly insurance companies are so tiresome to deal with, and I still cannot understand in this world of fast paced technology why we cannot just get quotes online for this sort of thing. After trying one or two I found a price that I was happy with for both my husbands and my car and made the decision to move from Discovery. Admittedly I did not approach Discovery, because I had felt that they had been overcharging me for some time, and I was also very short on time and resources. I sent an email to Discovery to ask them to please cancel my policy on the 31 March 2019, and arrange for the DQ tracking device to be de-installed. Oh my goodness, and then the phone call came! Unfortunately I didn’t catch they ladies name as I was a bit distracted at the time. The phone call quickly escalated into her being incredibly forceful and calmly aggressive and condescending. I was told that it was not their policy to cancel and insurance contract unless they had a reason why and they were happy with that reason. Then I was scolded like a naughty child because I hadn’t come to them first and begged for the discount which apparently was available on my profile. Of course she would not disclose what that discount was and was evasive and trying to get exact information and details about what the competition had offered and at the same time trying to undermine the other insurance company. This ridiculous conversation carried on and on for a while, with me repeatedly telling her to please just cancel the policy, eventually I just put the phone down. There were another two calls from Discovery Insurance which I had neither the time nor inclination to answer. I know that this behaviour is not unique to Discovery Insure. I have heard similar stories from lots of different people who have moved from other insurance companies. I myself had a similar experience many many years ago when moving to Discovery Insure from another insurance company. What I would like to know is does anyone of you insurance companies actually think that this tactic works? I understand that the insurance industry is a highly competitive cut throat industry, but that does not give you the right to treat people, and your customers like this, even if they are soon to be ex- customers. I know that this letter is not going to do anything to change the way you or any other insurance company do things, and that you have teams of people specifically picked and trained to do this sort of thing, but maybe you should consider being an industry leader and changing your tactics a bit. A little bit of compassion and respect goes a long way, especially considering that you don’t know what personal problems a person may be dealing with at the time. And please whatever you do Discovery, do not try and phone me regarding this again. I do not think my shoulders are broad enough right now to deal with anymore unpleasant behaviour, It does seem from my online profile that the policy has now been cancelled, and I do assume however that the policy will continue to 31 March 2019, as requested. If someone could just confirm that in writing to me in an email which you have on file, that would be appreciated. Thank you
