Very unhappy medical aid member

I am not very happy with my medical aid which is Discovery. I wanted to enquire if I could get a mammogram, covered by the medical aid as advertised by them and to my surprise , I can only do it with a doctor’s or worse specialist referral. I do not have savings because I am never sick and it would be for me a waste of money. Let’s not forget that savings is your money taken from you every month and put aside to pay for Gps. Prescriptions and the likes... So I have to pay +-R500 or more for the pleasure of a letter, for no reason other than prevention,or my decision to be careful about my health, to go to the service provider of their choice let’s rather say the provider with whom they have an agreement... This is a total racket. Prevention is what you do to avoid problems at at a later stage. And it is also meant to save money in the future to the medical aids! So no referral, which by the way, it is what Internet says. Do you need a referral for a mammogram in South Africa? You do not require a referral from your Doctor. Routine annual screening mammograms: Recommended in all women between the ages of 40 and 70.

But this is not the policy of most medical aids. I wish there was a governing body looking into that type of decisions... So no mammogram, as I cannot afford and do not want to pay for a consultation that has no reason to be.
