Upselling practices against FAIS
Headline: Deceptive Upselling Through Geographical Misrepresentation
On the 15/09/2026 at 11:40 I was on a call with a sales representative and I app**** for a specific, more affordable medical aid option. The sales representative explicitly stated that the option I wanted "had zero coverage in Johannesburg" in an attempt to pressure me into purchasing a more expensive option.
When I challenged the accuracy of this statement under Section 7 of the FAIS General Code of Conduct and requested a managerial escalation, I was informed a call will be returned by management.
I have since bypassed this deceptive hurdle and successfully secured the exact product I originally wanted which proves that the agent's statement was a complete misrepresentation intended to force an upsell.
I am logging this publicly to alert executive leadership and compliance directors to audit their sales call logs.
Upselling based on false geographic limits is a massive compliance risk. I expect a formal response from senior compliance management confirming that this agent's pipeline behavior is being audited and a look at management since the manager chose to turn a blind eye on this matter.
Unfortunately I do not remember the agents name but I think this is a compliance issues that discovery needs to take a hard look at as it makes me wonder how many customers fall victim to these tactics.
