Unhappy Client
When I retired in 2012 I decided to go onto the Coastal Saver plan as I retired in the Western Cape. About two years ago an advisor from Discovery advised me to change to the Classic Delta Saver plan. According to her it has better hospital benefits. When I asked what happens in case of an accident and there are no Delta listed hospitals I was told by her I may then go to any hospital for emergency treatment. At the beginning of February I went to the Southern Cape to visit friends. On the morning of 2 February I had a bad fall and broke some ribs and my shoulder bone. When I went to Life Bay View hospital I was told I had to make a co-payment of R 7650 before treatment can be started. When I phoned the Discovery call centre I was told only loss of life or a limb is seen as an emergency and that I had to drive to Cape Town or Port Elizabeth for treatment. Because I was in severe pain I decided to pay the R 7650 so that I can receive treatment. I spent two days in hospital. As a retired person this has been an expensive lesson not to just believe what you are told by Discovery advisors. She also advised me to invest some of my retirement money with Discovery Invest. Luckily I have not done so yet and will now rather stay with my own financial advisor.
