Unfairly Treated By Discovery Health
In was retrenched from work last year September 30 , 2014 ( In the very same month, i discovered that i was pregnant) and immediately the company that I worked for terminated medical aid. So myself and partner decided that i should join his moving from Discovery Health to LA Health which according to my understanding is one thing. The forms that we filled in the month of November 2014 stated if you were in Discovery for not later than 3 months, the waiting period will be 3 months thereafter approval will be done. I believe that Discovery picked up that I am pregnant and they are delaying the process for whatever reason. At first they said everything will be approved in 3 months and now they came back and its going to be nine months. What I do not understand is that I have been with Discovery for about 5 years now that I was retrenched and just after that a month later trying to transfer everything to my partners account it's being a problem that I am pregnant.

Discovery Health I do not appreciate to be discriminated against because I am pregnant, after being a loyal client for so many years.

Thank you for your comment.
Underwriting is a risk management tool that assists medical schemes in maintaining their long-term sustainability through the following:
o Protects the scheme against anti-selection. Anti-selection is when a member only uses a medical scheme when needed without paying the appropriate contribution
o Cuts down on potential costs
o Minimises abusive claiming behaviour.
As per the Medical Schemes Act, Medical Schemes are not allowed to decline membership to anyone.
The Medical Schemes Act allows medical schemes to protect their risk pools using the following types of underwriting:
o Waiting periods
o The late-joiner penalty.
We confirmed that you have been contacted by the relevant team who have addressed your concerns.
I am sorry that we could not provide a different outcome to your query however it is in line with the Scheme rules.
Kind regards
Jashvir
