Unfairly denied claim after given the run-around for 5 months.
This has gone on long enough now. Discovery South Africa, I have been a member for practically my entire life, but the treatment I have received over the last 4-5 months is, in a word, disgusting. In April this year, I was quarantined in Thailand for a week due to testing positive for Covid19. I was sick, bed bound for 5 of the 7 days. I was told before my trip that I was covered for Covid19-related medical issues. I have now been trying to claim back the funds (17,000 Thai Baht - approximately R7855,70) since I was still in quarantine. There has been fightback constantly from your company, claiming I did not have the right documents (I paid a small amount in cash and the balance on my card - I was asked to get further proof that the account was paid in full). I provided the card receipt, and after being told I needed a full account from the hospital- I went in, paid to request this document, and had to wait 14 business days for it to be posted to me in Bangkok. I then scanned these through as proof the account was paid in full. The case was finally escalated at the end of August, after months of arguing over which documents were needed, I still had not heard back. I called on 5 September to follow up and was told that the medical review board declined the claim because I am not covered for quarantine claims (out-of-hospital claims). Throughout this entire claims process, this was never mentioned. Not once. Why now am I being told this? Why did I have to do a run-around to get all of the documents I was asked for, only to be told that this claim actually never would have been processed in the first place? I've been hesitant to even readdress this due to the constant disappointment as it's honestly bringing up trauma related to the incident, but I felt it was right to share my experience so no one else suffers the same fate. I know insurance companies are known to mess us around and delay the claim as much as they can, and now I have truly experienced this to the most disappointing extent. I have been told that there is no next step. That I have to just accept this. I don’t see how this is fair. It is at least good to know where I stand with my insurance company. I am indeed just another number to them.
