TOTAL LACK OF UNDERSTANDING
I suffer from major depression. According to my specialist this must be covered on my medical aid. Discovery says no only when you are on the executive plan. I have been admitted for my condition twice in the last year and a half. I end up not drinking my medication because of the cost involved and my medical savings being depleted. This leads to me being severely suicidal. Discovery has no regard for my condition. As long as they receive the monthly payments and declines chronic medication all is good. Discovery clearly does not believe mental health is a priority. In a recent news article even the minister of health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi said that South Africans are not informed about minimum prescribed benefits. This article on Netwerk24 was about major depression and other conditions medical aids find excuses for not covering. Imagine someone with diabetes being refused insulin. My condition however is not been taken seriously by Discovery. My life is not worth living according to Discovery's attitude. Discovery has become a profit run business and not a medical aid where people like myself matter. Medication or death you choose Discovery

As discussed the Scheme does offer cover for 26 Chronic Disease List (CDL) conditions, subject to application and approval. Major Depression however does not fall part of these conditions. Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMB's) however is a set of minimum benefits that, by law, must be provided to all medical scheme members. The cover it gives includes the diagnosis, treatment and cost of ongoing care for a list of conditions. The list of conditions is defined in the Medical Schemes Act 131 of 1998. The PMB's make provision for the cover of the diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care of 270 diagnoses and their associated treatment, 27 chronic conditions & emergency conditions. Major Depressions is a PMB condition and I have forwarded you the relevant form that your treating provider will need to complete.
