Stranded by Discovery Health after 34 years of loyal membership when a critical brain scan is needed.
I am writing this out of sheer frustration and disappointment. I have been a loyal, premium-paying member of Discovery Health for 34 years. Over more than three decades, my family and I have been healthy. We have never abused our benefits, claiming only for the occasional seasonal ailment. We have paid our high premiums diligently, expecting that when a real medical need arose, we would be protected. This year, that expectation was completely shattered. First, my wife required essential dental surgery. Discovery paid only half of the cost, taking the remaining half directly out of my Medical Savings Account (MSA). To add insult to injury, this shortfall was structured in a way that added it to our self-payment obligations, leaving us with absolutely no financial relief and a completely depleted savings account. Now, I have been referred to a specialist and urgently require a brain scan. This is a serious diagnostic procedure, not an elective one. Yet, Discovery has indicated they will only cover 50% of the cost, stating the rest must come from my savings—savings that they already forced me to deplete for my wife's surgery. I am essentially being left stranded. After 34 years of loyalty, I am being told I cannot get a critical brain scan covered because of rigid funding policies and a savings account that was emptied by their own payment structures.
