Sounds great when you sign up, but do not fall for Discovery

When you sign on the benefits sound amazing; dental check up, antenatal scans, all covered! What they don't tell you is that they barely cover these at the rate of a government hospital. You pay for private health care, but they will only cover the cost that you would pay at a government hospital, which means you pay in usually about 60% of everything they say they will "cover". My previous dental checkup; they only covered R283; that is their rate for a dental checkup. Please tell me which dentist charges R283? My R2400 antenatal scan; they covered only 17%!! R416 for a specialist antenatal scan; please show me which doctor charges that. I am starting to dread the massive co-payment that will come with my hospital bill, I am guessing Discovery will cover the cost of the hairnet used by my surgeon; the rest is on me, right discovery? Pathetic, ****************.

Your contact was no help at all. Over the phone I was told my antenatal visits were not covered because I only get 2, but in the brochure for the Classic Smart Plan it says 8 are covered, AS WELL AS other specialist scans. Discovery is a ****. Also, 100% of the "Discovery rate" means the rate you would pay a **** sidewalk "Dr" because no doctors actually charge the "Discovery rate". I am beginning to think it is a better plan to take the R3000+ you pay to medical aid monthly and put it into a savings account. If I had done that 5 years ago, when I started paying medical aid, I would have R180 000 plus interest saved - which would easily have covered the R18 000 I now have to pay the hospital DESPITE having medical aid.
