Seriously ********* behaviour by Discovery Health
In June I was hospitalised for the very fist time for a emenrgency. I ruptured my achilles tendon while playing padel. I was rushed to the hospital within an hour of the incident - a literal emergency as I could not walk. This happened on 6 June 2026. At the hospital I was seen to by the Trauma Doctor on duty, who did the Thompson test and confirmed the tendon was definitley ruptured but required an ultrasound to be done. I was informed that no Sonographer was available after 5pm every day, and the earliest possible ultrasound was first thing the following morning. He wanted to admit me immediately but after discussing it realising nothing could be done for me that day, they allowed me to go home, after fitting me with a moonboot and crutches, and pain meds. I was in a wheel chair the entire time in hospital because again - I could not walk! I returned the following morning around 8am when the hospital called me, did the ultrasound (was a 4cm rupture) was taken back to the ER, and was immediately prepped for surgery (catheter, drip, no eating, etc) even though we didn't know when this would happen. Shortly after was notified that a Surgeon could see to me that day at 4pm. Again - I was prepped for surgery that morning not even knowing if surgery could happen that day because it was an emergency. I was told it could possibly only happen the next day, but now Discovery accuses me of planning my admission. At this point you can see nothing here was planned. Long story short, Surgeon contacted an anethetist and the surgery was successfully done at 4pm that day. Surgery and recovery from achilles rupture is a traumatic event by itself but I didn't realise that dealing with such an ********* company would be a bigger pain.. What happened to me was in every sense of the word an emergency and a PMB event, but from day 1 Discovery rejected the PMB claim because they were trying not to make full payment. They originally made up a story that the PMB was rejected because I went to hospital days after rupturing my achilles. Calls are recorded, this was a blatant lie they made up. I was rushed there directly from the court. They have nitpicked on the fact that I went home on the 6th June and was admitted on the 7th June. We've supp**** timelines, the Orthopeadic Surgeon supp**** motivation including clinical evidence letting them know I had no real choice, but Discovery keeps coming back with the excuse that this was a voluntary admission (it was not!). They hiding behind the fineprint because of me going home on the night of the 6th, even though there was nothing the hospital could do for me that day. They've eventually approved the PMB claim for the Surgeon but are now saying the Anethetist is not PMB. So they admit the Surgeon was a PMB claim but not the Anethetist - working together on the same surgery. Instead of realising they've saved a ton of money by me not being admitted on the 6th, they are using that to try and force me into medical debt. Having this experience dealing with Discovery has been traumatic. A huge company acting *********ly to attempt to not make full payment. Its disgusting what they can get away with and how they treat people. Any thinking person looking at the timeline and clinical information supp**** to them will know this was a 100% PMB event..but not them. Even though we pay a ton of money for medical aid each month, I am now faced with constant letters of demand for payments that Discovery should have made. If I had saved those payments for a year I could have easily paid cash for everything. This is legalised theft and I am absolutely disgusted with this company for putting me through this.
