Salesmen tricks or incompetence

I called some days ago explaining I moved to this country and my travel insurance expires soon and I would like to be covered for medical emergencies. After much talk I got a price quoted and was told that next step is to do the application on the phone. I decided to shop around and found other prices and when comparing with my friends I told them Discovery seems to be the best value for money. They told me I’ve been conned because if I choose discovery then upon finalizing the application they will present me with the late joining penalty fee that the other companies also added, and the reason Discovery hadn’t mentionned this in their quote was in order to lure me deeper in the process of applying. Indeed they were right. What a waste of time. The quote of 1900 Rand was in reality around 25 percent more expensive but this little piece of information was only coming after I finalized the application, despite the salesman knowing from the first minute that I just moved to the country and hence it would be impossible for me to be enlisted with a previous Sa medical scheme from the age of 35.
